Senate Resolution No. 7

Commemorating the birth and the accomplishments of Susan B. Anthony and urging the governor to proclaim February 15 as Susan B. Anthony Day in West Virginia.

Whereas, Susan Brownell Anthony was born on February 15, 1820, at South Adams, Massachusetts; and
Whereas, Susan B. Anthony's conviction that voteless and propertyless women could exert little influence in any reform movement led her to help organize the "Whole World's Temperance Convention"; and
Whereas, Her interest in the abolition of slavery led her in 1861 to organize the Women's Loyalty League to abolish slavery and guarantee civil and political rights for all Americans; and
Whereas, In 1868, she served as a Delegate to the National Labor Union Convention where her resolutions calling for an eight-hour day and equal work were adopted; and
Whereas, She organized the National Women's Suffrage Association in 1868, committed to the passage of a national women's suffrage amendment, and through her efforts the first women's suffrage amendment to the United States Constitution was introduced into Congress in December, 1868; and
Whereas With her unusual single-mindedness she entered upon a thirty-year period of almost ceaseless travel throughout thecountry working for passage of a federal suffrage amendment to the United States Constitution; and
Whereas, Her exceptional organizational ability and political acumen enabled her to lead the women's suffrage movement for over fifty years; and
Whereas, In February, 1906, she attended her last women's suffrage convention and left her message for the future: "Failure Is Impossible"; and
Whereas, Susan B. Anthony died in 1906, fourteen years before the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guaranteed the right to vote to the women of the United States; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate recognize and commemorate Susan B. Anthony's efforts on behalf of the women of the nation and of this state as exemplary and pay tribute to the accomplishments of Susan B. Anthony in securing equal voting rights for women; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Senate celebrate February 15 as Susan B. Anthony Day in West Virginia; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Senate do urge the governor to proclaim February 15 as Susan B. Anthony Day in West Virginia and to encourage all citizens of the state to join in this commemoration.
